According to the American Association of Orthodontics (AAO), children should receive an orthodontic screening by age 9, because permanent teeth may begin to emerge around age 6 or 7 and begin to reveal orthodontic problems. This is an important time to explore orthodontics because children’s bones are still growing, so preventative measures may be implemented and met with less resistance. Early intervention practices can help minimize the need for future procedures and help mitigate the length of those that are still needed.
